If your garage door is extremely noisy when opening and closing, it can be quite the disturbance for people in your home and your neighbors, especially if you come home late at night or leave for work early in the morning. This is why it's important to consider these four ways to make your garage door quieter:

  1. Tighten the Nuts: With a wrench, you will want to tighten all the nuts of the garage door so that they are snug, but not overly tight. The garage door parts can become loose over time, which makes it really noisy when opening and closing because these parts will move around more than they should.
  2. Replace the Rollers: The rollers of the garage door can become worn over time. You will want to check for this. If the metal rollers are not worn, then you can lubricate them instead to see if this helps resolve the issue. However, if they do need to be replaced, you may want to consider nylon rollers instead of metal. The benefit of this is that nylon rollers are quieter and they don't require regular lubrication like metal does. You can do this yourself unless you have torsion springs, which are attached to the header above the garage door. If this is the case, the rollers are always under constant tension. You will want professionals to do the replacing for you for safety reasons.
  3. Replace the Hinges: The hinges of the garage door can also become worn. The hole of the hinges that hold the roller stem can become too large and won't appear perfectly round. This is when you should have them replaced.
  4. Replace the Insulation Strip: When you close the garage door and notice extra nosiness, it could be because the garage door is slamming too hard against the ground. This can be because the insulation strip along the bottom of the garage door has become too worn and needs to be replaced. Not only will the insulation in your garage improve, but you can also be sure that your garage door is shutting quieter. Be sure that if you replace the insulation strip with a rubber insulation strip you don't cut it to fit perfectly under the garage door. Leave a little bit of length since rubber shrinks overtime.

By knowing some of the ways to make your noisy garage door quieter, not only will your family appreciate it, but your neighbors will as well.
